High Tech, Small Town: 19th C. 3D Photography in Dane Co

On Tuesday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m., local historian Arlo Paust will present “High Tech, Small Town: 19th Century 3D Photography in Dane County.” Paust will share an illustrated overview of the history of 3D stereoscopic photography in rural Wisconsin during this era—an innovation that was then sweeping the nation. He will spotlight several local photographers, including Andreas Larsen Dahl, Samuel Nilson Rockstead and more, whose prolific bodies of work are well represented in the collection of the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society. Their photographs represent some of the earliest records of our landscapes and domestic spaces; they document remarkable details of rural life in the Driftless area. In particular, Paust will contend, these important images capture Norwegian immigrant families who were in the process of transitioning to life as Americans. Presenter Arlo Paust is an avid student of southwestern Wisconsin history who hails from nearby Blanchardville. The July 18 educational program is free, family-friendly and open to the public; reservations are not required. Doors open at 5pm; come early to check out the new exhibit, "History in 3D."
